Design + Code = Experience

* What the Heck is Whipcode?

Whipcode aims to be a simple introduction/primer to modern web design practices and principles. Rather than trying to teach old techniques and antiquated approaches such as inline style, presentational HTML, image slicing, and tables for layout. This site aims to give beginners an overview and a head start in implementing a more future proof standards based approach using semantic mark-up and externalized presentational logic through cascading style sheets.

Sheeesh! That was a mouthful wasn't it? Hi, my name is Kris Hedges and I decided to make this site because I felt like the huge amount of tutorial sites and educational materials that have accumulated through the years on the ever changing subject of web design can be very confusing and even intimidating for the true newcomer. The sheer magnitude of reference material and half-hearted attempts at tutorials made over the past 10-15 years, some good, some bad, can be overwhelming, conflicting, and just down right awful at helping the beginner get a foothold. So if you didn't understand the first part at all, but you want to learn how to properly write XHTML/CSS code and go from a cool design idea to a working website, consider this site your crash course. My aim is to get you started in the right direction and make it fun at the same time.

* Ready to Start?

Great! Well before going on to the video tutorials it's recommended that you at least read through the text first. It consists of, around 12 pages of text to begin with and then moves on to a series of video tutorials that you can follow along with, taking you from a simple mock-up to a working site. You may not understand everything in the reading fully at first, but by exposing yourself to the material you will be better equipped to understand and follow along with the video tutorials and then of course, you can always come back to the text for reference once you begin creating your own designs.
