Who are you?
My name is Kris Hedges, I'm a student of life, freelance web/graphic designer, web applications developer, consultant, blogger, self professed philosopher, and all around technofile. I love technology. Im a Mac and linux fanatic, musician, and graphic artist. To find out more about me you can go to my portfolio site and blog at InkSpeck.com or read some of my technology articles at GeekPath.com where I am a contributing writer.
What's with the name Whipcode?
Hmmm... Well, I love desserts and they always go better with whipped cream or depending on your chosen vernacular Whooped cream. I really wanted this site to be fun and educational for people and the name seemed to have just the right amounts of cool and whimsy necessary.
What's this site all about?
Well, It's on the front page but, you probably just got all antsy and decided to go jumping around didn't you? Well that's O.K. here it is for you to read now.
Whipcode.com aims to be a simple introduction or primer to 21st century web design principles. Rather than teaching antiquated approaches to web design such as inline style, presentational HTML, image slicing, and tables for layout we aim to give an overview of where to start in implementing a modern web standards oriented approach via semantic mark-up and all presentational logic in external cascading style sheets.
Sheeesh! That was a mouthful wasn't it? My name is Kris Hedges, I decided to make this site because I felt like the tutorial sites and education materials available for web design are very confusing and intimidating for the true newcomer. The sheer magnitude of reference material and half-hearted attempts at tutorials made over the past fifteen years, some good for their time of course, can be overwhelming, conflicting, and just down right awful at helping a beginner get a foothold. So if you didn't understand the first part at all, but you want to learn how to properly write XHTML/CSS code and go from a cool design to a working website, consider this site a crash course to get you started in the right direction.
How long does the course take?
Honestly, it can take as long as you want it too. Since it's free and on the web like this you can go at whatever pace you choose. I'd say though that the average person trying things out should be able to get through all the reading and videos in less than 5-6 hours, but take as much time as you need to really absorb the material. This isn't a race so just have fun with it break it up over the course of a week if you want. Whatever or however you want to do it is up to you.
Does this cost anything?
No, and because this is all free and I try to answer most questions as timely as possible, but I am human and doing this out of the kindness of my heart so if I don't get to your question or never answer don't take it personally. Sometimes in my never ending quest to reach "inbox 0" I miss things just ask me again and I'll do my best to keep up.
Can you Design a site for me?
Sure, but only as paid work. You can go to my portfolio site to find out how you can hire me to work on your project. I try to keep my rates as reasonable as possible and will work with clients such as non-profits in ways that many other firms wouldn't. Just go to www.InkSpeck.com and click on the hire button to begin the process.
Can you Help me Design my site?
Probably, but of course, I won't do the work for free. As far as the free help I can provide you're looking at it. I'd love to be able to just give everyone the ability to jump right in to web development with the understanding of cross-platform standards based design, but the intricacies of it all are only something you can really understand with years of experience. This site can take you a long way into the world of web design, but it is in no way a complete guide to everything that is possible. If you'd like to hire me as a designer or as a consultant/trainer just go to www.InkSpeck.com and click on the hire button to begin the process.
